Retired Lieutenant Colonel Joins WVSU Alumni Honored for Military Service

ROTC Hall of Fame induction scheduled for Oct. 5

 Upholding a long, proud tradition of students, faculty and staff who served in the military, the West Virginia State University ROTC Hall of Fame will induct posthumously one alumnus, Lieutenant Colonel Don Cornell Carter. His widow Renee will accept the honor. The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. Oct. 5 in the theater of the Davis Fine Arts Building.  

Born in 1955, Carter served as a military policeman and a security liaison in Yemen. He was a 1977 distinguished military graduate from West Virginia State, where he earned a bachelor of science in Criminal Justice. He went on to earn a master of science in Public Administration from Central Michigan University. Following his retirement, Carter served as a JROTC instructor at Smithfield High School in Smithfield, Va. According to his family, the students became special to him as he worked to teach them respect, citizenship and goal-setting. Carter passed away 2008.  Among his awards and decorations are Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (4th award), the Army Commendation Medal (2nd award), Army Superior Unit award, National Defense Service Medal (2nd award), Global War, Army Meritorious Service Medals and many others.

Some of Carter’s community activities included Ruritan Club, NAACP, Relay for Life fundraising/relay events, and the National Association of Black Law Enforcement Officers.

 Perry James DuBois, Sr., 57, born on March 23, 1955 in Jersey City, New Jersey, entered into eternal rest on Monday, August 6, 2012, at 4:45 a.m. at University Hospital, Newark, New Jersey.Perry worked at Tokyo-Mitsu-bishi Bank, (New York), Allied Security, Department of Juve-nile Corrections, Light Rail, the Beacon Realto, and a host of other companies in New York and New Jersey.Perry was predeceased by his parents, Harriet Saunders and Ralph DuBois. He was married to Davene Canady. Perry is sur-vived by two sisters, Diane and Maxine; a brother Bernard; a brother-in-law Jeff; three sons, Perry, Jr., Aaron, Fuquan and step-son Camara; sisters-in-law, Darlene, Denise and Starlett; brothers-in-law, Kenneth, Leonard and Robert; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
